Airbnb Owner Loses Legal Battle Over Sauna After Neighbour Complaints
Airbnb Owner Loses Sauna Battle After Neighbour Complaints

An Airbnb owner in Norfolk has lost a long legal battle to retain a sauna and decking that neighbours claimed were used for 'debauchery' and sexual activity. Owen Chandler Harrod marketed his bungalow in Ormesby St Margaret as a couple's getaway with a hot tub, but locals said the raised decking allowed public viewing of sexual acts.

Background of the Dispute

Harrod was previously refused retrospective planning permission after a whistleblower reported unauthorised building work. He then appealed the refusal from Great Yarmouth Borough Council for the decking, sauna outbuilding, and 2.8-metre tall trellis fencing. The Planning Inspectorate dismissed his appeal after a site visit last month, during which no one was available to grant access.

Neighbour Complaints

Residents reported finding used condoms and litter in their gardens and hearing noise from the property. Rosemary Vincent, 90, stated: 'There is all sorts of debauchery there, which all the residents are aware of.' John Huxford, 80, added: 'I have seen people having sex on the decking and up to all sorts of mischief in the hot tub. People also stand on the table, shouting. As a result of the partying, all sorts of stuff has been thrown into my garden - beer cans, litter and even a used condom. It is just disgusting.'

Property Details

The bungalow still boasts a 4.81 rating on Airbnb and is listed as a 'coastal getaway' with a super-king bed, 70-inch 4K TV, and a large hot tub. The description calls it a 'quiet relaxing location' five minutes from the seaside. Harrod, who bought the property during the pandemic, could now be forced to remove the sauna, decking, and trellis.

Owner's Response

Harrod previously said: 'I'm not aware of any problems with the Airbnb, it’s been very successful and it's always fully booked. I've had nothing but positive conversations and experiences with all my neighbours on the road. It's a lovely area and everybody has been very kind and helpful. Of course, if any of the neighbours need to have a conversation with me, they are more than welcome to.'
