An Airbnb owner accused of hosting sex parties has lost his appeal to keep a sauna, elevated decking and tall trellis fencing at his Norfolk bungalow. Chandler Harrod marketed the property in Ormesby St Margaret as a romantic getaway, but neighbours claimed guests engaged in outdoor sexual activity in full view of adjacent gardens.
Council Refusal and Appeal
Great Yarmouth Borough Council refused retrospective planning permission for the decking, sauna outbuilding and 2.8-metre high trellis last year after a whistleblower reported unauthorised building work. Harrod appealed to the Planning Inspectorate, which dismissed the appeal following a site visit in June 2026. The inspector noted that nobody was available to grant access to the property, which has a 4.81 rating on Airbnb and costs £221 for two nights.
Neighbour Complaints
Locals submitted a flood of objections, citing unauthorised structures and guest behaviour. Rosemary Vincent, 90, said: "There is all sorts of debauchery there, which all the residents are aware of." John Huxford, 80, added: "I have seen people having sex on the decking and up to all sorts of mischief in the hot tub. People also stand on the table, shouting." He also reported beer cans, litter and used condoms thrown into his garden.
Owner's Response
Harrod previously stated: "I'm not aware of any problems with the Airbnb, it's been very successful and it's always fully booked. I've had nothing but positive conversations and experiences with all my neighbours on the road." He bought the property during the pandemic and now faces enforcement action to remove the sauna, decking and trellis.
Automatic Dismissal
Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, the inspector warned Harrod in writing that a no-show would result in automatic dismissal. The appeal was thrown out, and the bungalow remains listed on Airbnb as a "coastal getaway with sauna and hot tub."
