Rooney urges Man Utd to sign Lewis-Skelly in £45m U-turn

Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United to make a U-turn and sign Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly, along with three other players, before the transfer window shuts. The 19-year-old was reportedly offered to United and Chelsea, but neither club showed interest initially.

Lewis-Skelly's rise and availability

Lewis-Skelly struggled for game time last season but broke into Mikel Arteta's team late on, helping Arsenal win the Premier League and reach the Champions League final. Arsenal are reportedly open to selling him after signing Bruno Guimaraes for £75m, with a fee of around £45m mentioned.

Intermediaries approached both United and Chelsea, but neither was receptive. Rooney, speaking on Stick to United, called the potential signing a 'no-brainer'.

Rooney's transfer wishlist

Rooney also wants a centre-back, a central midfielder, and a centre-forward. He said: 'I don't think you can rely on Luke Shaw to be consistent for the whole season and that leads me to Myles Lewis-Skelly. We're hearing that he could be available for not that much money, so I think that's an absolute no-brainer.'

He added: 'If you can get a player in who can play left-back and centre-midfield, that's an absolute no-brainer. He's young and he's got a massive future ahead of him.'

United's left-back search

United manager Michael Carrick has expressed interest in a new left-back to cover for Luke Shaw, with Lewis Hall linked but Newcastle United refusing to sell. Lewis-Skelly could be an option, as he can also play in midfield.

Rooney noted that Arsenal selling Lewis-Skelly would be 'pure profit' and understandable, but for United, 'it's a no-brainer, they definitely need to bring in a left-back, that's a priority for United.'

Lewis-Skelly impressed in Arsenal's 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City on Sunday. Arsenal begin their title defence against Coventry City on Friday, while United face Hull City the following day.
