Rodri digs at Arsenal in Man City farewell as Barca move confirmed

Rodri has completed a £65million move to Barcelona, signing a four-year contract, and used his farewell message to Manchester City to take a parting shot at Arsenal.

The 30-year-old midfielder's transfer was confirmed on Tuesday, with the Spain international opting to join the La Liga giants despite interest from Real Madrid. His return to Spain ends a seven-year spell at the Etihad, during which he was instrumental in City's success, particularly in Premier League title battles with Arsenal.

Emotional goodbye letter

In his goodbye letter, Rodri did not reference the recent title races but instead highlighted his stoppage-time goal that secured a controversial 2-1 victory at the Emirates in 2022. He wrote: "Many incredible moments come to my mind. My first trophy at City, in my first game. The last minute winners, like Arsenal away. Scoring in the (Aston) Villa game to reach the Premier League, when it looked so tough."

He added: "Scoring the goal to win the Champions League that we all wanted so much. The incredible reception you gave me after the Ballon d'Or. You cannot imagine how proud I am to be the first player to win this award in a sky blue shirt. Making history, with the Treble, with Four in a Row. We saw things they'll never see."

Dig at Arsenal

Rodri has previously aimed criticism at Arsenal, suggesting after City's 2024 title win that the Gunners had a 'mentality' problem. Although he will no longer face them domestically, he could meet them in the Champions League with Barcelona. His arrival strengthens Hansi Flick's side, who are among the favourites to win the competition, having lifted it with City in 2023.

Rodri is also fresh from being a key figure in Spain's World Cup triumph. At his unveiling, he said: "I am so happy to be here. It's a really special day, a new, important chapter in my career. It was a tough decision. Firstly because I was leaving City, who gave me everything. I was really happy there and will always be grateful. I appreciate how they facilitated my exit. Barcelona has always been a reference for me because of the values and the playing style here. It's true I had another offer, but Barca was the first option and I told the board here that."
