A proposed casino in Times Square, backed by Jay-Z's Roc Nation, Caesars Palace, and building owner SL Green Realty, has been rejected by the project's Community Advisory Committee (CAC). The vote, held on [date not specified], saw four members oppose the application, with only two in favour, leading to its disapproval.
The plan would have transformed the One Aster Plaza office tower at 1515 Broadway into a 150,000-square-foot casino, featuring a sports-oriented 40/40 Club, spas, restaurants, and an exclusive hotel. The building also houses the Minskoff Theater, home to 'The Lion King'. Proponents claimed the project would generate $7 billion in tax revenue over a decade, create 3,000 construction and 3,800 permanent jobs, and bring $26.7 billion to local businesses.
Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez thanked Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams for their support, while criticising other politicians for lacking courage. The project's organisers expressed disappointment, stating they remain committed to advocating for positive change in New York City.
Opponents, including the Hell's Kitchen Neighborhood Association and Broadway unions, raised concerns about increased crime and harm to the theatre district. The No Times Square Casino campaign celebrated the vote, with Broadway League president Jason Laks stating, 'A casino can go anywhere, but Broadway only lives here.'
SL Green CEO Marc Holliday harshly criticised the decision, calling it a 'despicable display of cowardice' and accusing opponents of lacking consideration for potential beneficiaries.
