Mohamed Salah concluded his Liverpool career with an assist, a guard of honour, and a heartfelt wish fulfilled, as the Reds drew 1-1 with Brentford at Anfield on Sunday. The forward was visibly emotional during the final rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' at the stadium.
Emotional Farewell for Salah and Henderson
On an emotional afternoon, Salah got exactly what he wanted regarding the reception for returning midfielder Jordan Henderson. Henderson was back at Anfield for the first time since his controversial departure nearly three years ago to join Al-Ettifaq. The midfielder, who captained Liverpool to Champions League and Premier League glory, never received a proper Anfield farewell before his move to Saudi Arabia.
However, on Sunday, as Henderson was substituted for Aaron Hickey in the 60th minute, Liverpool supporters gave him a standing ovation. Reds players and manager Arne Slot joined in the applause. After the match, Henderson completed a lap of appreciation around Anfield, clapping all four sides of the ground, with fans showing immense love for the England international.
Salah's Call for a Special Reception
Earlier this month, Salah urged Liverpool supporters to give Henderson a special reception. In an interview with Steven Gerrard, Salah said: "I think for the last game of the season against Brentford, the people in the city know how much it meant to Hendo being here. He was captain of the club, here longer than me, Robbo, Virg, he did not get the farewell he deserved. I don't know how the club is going to manage it, but I really wish they do something special for him because he has been one of the best players at this club."
Gerrard responded: "The fans absolutely idolised Henderson, just like yourself. Get him next to you at the end of the game if you can, get him involved." Salah replied: "I really hope so. Maybe people not in the dressing room know how important he was, but you were aware of it as you played with him and he loved the club."
Henderson's Journey and Emotional Return
Henderson spent only six months in Saudi Arabia before joining Dutch giants Ajax. He then spent 18 months in Amsterdam before returning to the Premier League this summer to join Brentford. Reflecting on the reception, Henderson admitted: "Coming back here was emotional for me. The reaction when I went off was incredible; I had goosebumps. It was nice to come back and see the fans. My family is here. It's an emotional time seeing someone like Mo leaving this club. I thanked him for everything he's done for this club and me."
He added: "It was always a tough ask to come here and win. To get so close and not quite get over the line is tough to take. We have to kick on again next year."
