Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell has been forced to retire from the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal after encountering an engine problem while leading the race.
The British driver was at the front of the field at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on the Île Sainte-Hélène when he suffered an engine issue approaching turn eight. The problem was clearly audible on the broadcast, with Russell losing power and coming to a stop on the track.
This retirement marks a disappointing end to what had been a strong performance for Russell, who had been in contention for a podium finish. The exact nature of the mechanical failure is yet to be confirmed by the Mercedes team.
Further details are expected to follow as the race continues.
