Global Panel Assembles for Prestigious Women's Football Ranking
The Guardian is preparing to launch its eighth annual list of the world's 100 best female footballers in 2025, following another captivating year for the women's game. This year's selection process features the most extensive judging panel in the award's history, comprising legendary former players, esteemed coaches, and respected journalists from across the globe.
Star-Studded Judging Panel Includes Former Winners
Among the notable new additions to the voting panel are several footballing icons making their debut as judges. Lieke Martens, who previously topped the list in 2017, marks a significant milestone as the first former winner to contribute to the selection process. She's joined by other distinguished former players including Sam Mewis, Marta Corredera, and Desire Oparanozie, all bringing their elite-level experience to the evaluation process.
The coaching representation is equally impressive, featuring outgoing Kansas City Current head coach Vlatko Andonovski and new OL Lyonnes manager Jonatan Giráldez. Arsenal's Champions League-winning coach Renée Slegers also joins the panel, alongside Canada's Casey Stoney and Germany assistant Maren Meinert.
Countdown to Revelation Begins in December
The judges' votes have been meticulously counted to determine the number one female footballer of 2025, assessing performances during a twelve-month period that included an enthralling Euro 2025, a spectacular Copa América, and a wide-open African Cup of Nations.
The highly anticipated countdown begins on Monday, December 1st, with positions 100 through 71 revealed first. The publication will then unveil thirty additional names on consecutive days, culminating with the top ten reveal on Thursday, December 4th, to complete this year's comprehensive list.
The complete judging panel, organized alphabetically by category, represents the most diverse and qualified group ever assembled for this prestigious ranking, ensuring a thorough and fair assessment of the world's top female football talent.
