Eddie Howe has declared his commitment to remain as Newcastle United manager following a disappointing end to the season, which saw the Magpies finish 12th in the Premier League after a 2-0 defeat at Fulham. Goals from Issa Diop and Tom Cairney sealed the loss at Craven Cottage, leaving Newcastle with a flat conclusion to a challenging campaign.
Howe's Stance on His Future
Despite speculation that his tenure might be at risk, the 48-year-old insisted he has no intention of stepping down. Speaking to Chronicle Live, Howe stated: "My commitment has never wavered from day one to today. Regardless of who it is, unity running through a football club is important from top to bottom. You need that togetherness and that plan."
Newcastle had taken seven points from a possible nine in their final three matches before the defeat, but the loss dropped them to 12th, their lowest finish under Howe. He took charge in November 2021 and has guided the club to finishes of 11th, 4th, 7th, and 5th, while also winning the Carabao Cup last season and securing Champions League football.
Co-Owner's Statement
Co-owner Jamie Reuben also addressed the season on social media, acknowledging the disappointment. "Thank you to the travelling support today. Clearly a very disappointing result at the end of an underwhelming season, despite some great moments in the Champions League and other domestic cups we have not lived up to where we should and need to be," he posted on X.
Reuben added: "All of us from ownership down to the coaching staff and players will work tirelessly over the summer to advance our project, come back stronger and start the new season in the best way possible."
Looking Ahead
Newcastle will return for pre-season training on July 13, with Howe acknowledging the need for reflection and improvement. "Whenever you have things to work on you have to absorb it. If you deflect and think it's nothing to do with us, then you never grow or improve. Reflection, analysis and learning is all part of the growing at any football club and certainly there is a lot to take in and absorb from this season," he said.
