Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has delivered a fresh fitness update on midfielder Declan Rice ahead of a crucial Premier League showdown with Aston Villa this weekend.
Arteta's cautious optimism over Rice
The England international was forced off late during the Gunners' midweek victory over Brentford at the Emirates Stadium, sparking immediate concern. However, Arteta struck a note of cautious optimism during his pre-match press conference on Friday.
"Well, let's see," Arteta told reporters. "I think with all the questions I'm going to get, the answer, unfortunately, is going to be the same. We have another training session in the afternoon."
He emphasised that the situation remained fluid, adding: "Every hour is going to be very important to see the availability of the players. After that, we'll decide." Rice himself had initially downplayed the issue, offering hope that the problem is not severe.
More complicated worry for Mosquera
While Rice's situation appears manageable, Arteta revealed a potentially more serious concern regarding defender Cristhian Mosquera. The centre-back was substituted in the first half against Brentford.
"That's the one that is more complicated," Arteta admitted regarding Mosquera. "But again, we have another test today to see where we are with them."
This new defensive blow compounds existing absences. Gabriel and William Saliba were again unavailable for the Brentford game, while attackers Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz also remain sidelined. Arteta did offer a sliver of hope for some, stating Saliba and Trossard's returns are "a matter of days."
Title race context for Villa visit
The context for Saturday's lunchtime kick-off could not be more significant. Arsenal's win on Wednesday extended their lead at the Premier League summit to five points.
With closest rivals Manchester City not playing until 3pm on Saturday, the Gunners have a chance to stretch that advantage to eight points before City host Sunderland. However, the challenge is formidable, as Unai Emery's Aston Villa currently sit third in the table following a thrilling 4-3 win at Brighton.
Arteta acknowledged the importance of momentum, saying: "Every time you win a game obviously you are a little bit closer to your objective and it is the only thing we can do. We have to focus on performing, preparing really well for tomorrow."
The final decisions on Rice and Mosquera will now be pivotal as Arsenal look to maintain their grip on top spot against a direct rival.
