SFA VAR Panel Errors Raise Pressure on Ref Chief Willie Collum
VAR Errors Raise Pressure on Ref Chief Willie Collum

The verdicts of the SFA's Key Match Incident panel do not carry immense weight in the grand scheme of things. After all, it is merely the opinion of a few individuals who have reviewed the rules.

However, their majority view expressed midweek that VAR erred in awarding a last-minute penalty to Celtic against Motherwell on the penultimate day of the season only intensifies the pressure on referees' chief Willie Collum and his team.

This is particularly significant given that the week before, the panel also deemed that referee Steven McLean, who was rewarded with the Scottish Cup final the following day, made a mistake by not awarding Hearts a penalty at Fir Park for a clear foul on Alexandros Kyziridis.

Had these decisions been correct, Hearts would have won the Premiership. Both calls were made with the assistance of video replays. The magnitude of this cannot be overlooked amidst the surrounding noise and frustration. Willie Collum's VAR review will address the dubious decisions that cost Hearts the title.

This is not about conspiracy theories concerning Celtic. It is not about officials blowing the whistle during a pitch invasion. It is about league titles being decided by referee calls that the vast majority of people simply cannot comprehend.

And that must be the central focus of Collum's next VAR Review, which is expected to be broadcast later this week. He reportedly told Hearts boss Derek McInnes that McLean was wrong, so some explanation as to why McLean officiated at Hampden would be welcome.

The show cannot merely be an admission of further errors. It must include a roadmap for the future of the game and explain why a chaotic VAR campaign cannot repeat itself.

Otherwise, questions about his future will only grow louder. Time to get the popcorn in.
