Van de Ven Blasts 'Embarrassing' Tottenham Relegation Scare
Van de Ven: Tottenham Relegation Scare 'Embarrassing'

Micky van de Ven has delivered a damning verdict on Tottenham Hotspur's season, labelling it 'embarrassing' that the club required a final-day victory to secure their Premier League survival. The Dutch defender refused to mince words after Spurs edged past Everton 1-0 at home on Sunday, a result that ensured top-flight football next season.

Van de Ven's Blunt Assessment

'It is unacceptable that the last game we played this season we play for relegation,' Van de Ven said. 'This club has some unbelievable players. It was embarrassing to let it come to the final day but we did it and that is what is important.' Tottenham's campaign has been tumultuous, with managers Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor both dismissed before Roberto De Zerbi took the helm in a desperate bid to steer the club away from the drop zone.

Unity in Adversity

Despite the turmoil, Spurs found the togetherness needed to get over the line, aided by West Ham's 3-0 defeat of Leeds United across London. Van de Ven credited the fans for their support: 'I think everyone was behind us today and we played with 12 men on the pitch. Everton were unbelievable, they kept pushing us and when we needed to defend but they kept pushing, I think they were a massive part of the win.'

Emotional Final Whistle

Reflecting on the relief at full-time, Van de Ven admitted: 'To be honest I was more emotional at the end of the final whistle. It has been a tough season for me personally as well. I played almost every game and I have suffered a lot. The emotions are really happy and we must not let it happen again.'

Palhinha's Heroics

Joao Palhinha scored the decisive goal that kept Tottenham up, sparking jubilant scenes. 'It is an amazing feeling,' said the Portuguese midfielder. 'It was a really tough season in every single way. A lot of things happened in the season but today with the crowd I have never seen anything like that. We cannot change the bad season we've had but this environment and support from the fans is amazing.'

Palhinha dedicated his goal to his family: 'It was just a goal to help the team. I had a lot of emotions inside and I dedicate the goal to both my sons with the celebration. The goal is for them and my parents.'

With the season now over, Van de Ven's future, along with many underperforming Spurs stars, will face scrutiny. But for now, Tottenham can breathe a sigh of relief after escaping the ultimate embarrassment for a club that competed in the Champions League just months ago.
