The 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, scheduled for this month, remains engulfed in controversy over Israel's participation. Five countries have withdrawn in protest, including Spain, one of the "Big Five" nations guaranteed a final spot. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has faced calls to ban Israel for three consecutive years but has allowed the country to compete each time.
Boycotts and Allegations
Spain's boycott was announced by José Pablo López, chair of the Spanish radio and television corporation, who stated, "As joint organisers of the Eurovision song contest, we share a collective responsibility. While Israel has regularly participated, the current events and the genocide taking place make it impossible for us to look the other way." He added that Eurovision is not apolitical and that Israel leverages the event internationally. Israel denies allegations of genocide, which have been raised by a UN Commission, Amnesty International, and the International Association of Genocide Scholars.
EBU's Stance and Precedents
The EBU has historically branded Eurovision as apolitical but set a precedent in 2022 by banning Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. However, the ban came only after other nations threatened a boycott. Regarding Israel, some point to the prominent sponsorship by Israeli company Moroccanoil. Additionally, a counter-boycott threat from countries like Germany, which threatened to withdraw if Israel were banned, complicates matters.
New Rules and Warnings
In December 2025, the EBU voted not to hold a vote on Israel's participation but instead introduced new rules against voting manipulation, following claims that Israel encouraged expatriates to use 20 votes in 2025. On 9 May 2026, Eurovision issued a formal warning to Israel's broadcaster Kan after it urged viewers to "vote 10 times" for singer Noam Bettan, violating competition rules. Eurovision director Martin Green confirmed that Kan immediately removed the videos. Kan responded that the campaign was not financed by any group.
The 2026 Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Vienna, with semi-finals on 12 and 14 May and the final on 16 May.
