Russia launched more than 400 drones at Ukraine in a large-scale daytime attack on Friday, injuring at least 10 people in the western city of Ternopil, according to Ukrainian officials. The assault marks one of the most significant drone barrages in recent weeks.
Ukrainian Strikes and Russian Ceasefire Proposal
In response, Ukraine carried out its fourth attack in two weeks on the Tuapse oil refinery located on the Black Sea coast, causing a fire at the facility. Simultaneously, Russian drones struck the port city of Odesa, injuring at least 20 people and damaging residential buildings and critical infrastructure.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would unilaterally implement a temporary ceasefire around Victory Day on 9 May, stating that Ukraine's acceptance was not required. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed the proposal as 'manipulative' and a 'theatrical performance,' reiterating his call for an unconditional 30-day truce. Zelenskyy is seeking details of a short-term ceasefire that Russia reportedly proposed to former US President Donald Trump.
Incidents in Russia and UK Warning
In a separate incident, a Russian army officer was killed in an explosion in a military town, in what appeared to be a failed attempt to target Major General Azatbek Omurbekov. The attack highlights ongoing internal security challenges within Russia.
Meanwhile, the head of the Royal Navy warned of a significant increase in Russian incursions into British waters, urging the UK to bolster its defence capabilities to counter the growing threat.
The developments underscore the intensifying conflict as both sides continue to exchange strikes, with diplomatic efforts facing hurdles.
