The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) may reassess Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claims when certain changes are reported or identified. Many recipients are unclear about what triggers a review. PIP awards are typically not indefinite and include a specified review period, which can range from nine months to ten years for a 'light touch' review, depending on the likelihood of change in a person's condition. The review date is provided in the award letter.
What Can Trigger a PIP Reassessment?
A common trigger is a change in your health condition, such as improvement, deterioration, or a new diagnosis. You must notify the DWP promptly, as this may lead to a review. Changes in daily living or mobility needs can also prompt reassessment. Other triggers include:
- Moving into or out of a hospital or care home
- Extended time abroad
- Information from routine checks or other government departments
Reassessments may also occur as part of broader claim reviews.
How Often Do PIP Reviews Occur?
Most claimants have a scheduled review at the end of their award period. Short awards (for conditions expected to change) may be reviewed within one to two years. Longer awards can last five years or more, with some receiving ongoing awards and a 'light touch' review after about ten years. A 'light touch' review is for claimants with stable needs unlikely to change, high-level needs that will stay the same or worsen, a planned award review at State Pension age, or a special rules for end of life claim at State Pension age. Even with extended awards, payments may be adjusted after review.
What Happens During a Reassessment?
Claimants receive a form asking about changes in condition or circumstances. They may need to attend another assessment, though decisions can sometimes be based on existing medical evidence. After reassessment, payments may stay the same, increase, decrease, or stop. Failing to report a relevant change could affect payments and lead to overpayments requiring repayment.
