Philippine President Marcos Jr Performs Star Jumps to Dispel Health Rumours
In a striking display aimed at quelling persistent speculation about his physical condition, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr executed a series of star jumps and a brief jog outside his office on Monday, directly in front of assembled journalists. The 68-year-old leader, clad in formal office attire, reading glasses, and leather shoes, undertook this impromptu workout to emphatically counter rumours of his deteriorating health.
Marcos Challenges Critics to a Fitness Test
"I challenge anyone who are saying that I am sick, that they come and exercise with me," Marcos declared to reporters. "You come to the gym with me. Let's see who can lift the weights better." He further asserted, "Those people who tell you that I'm sick, that I'm paralysed, they're all liars." The president explained his motivation, stating he wanted to alleviate any public concern about his wellbeing, particularly at a time when citizens are already grappling with problems stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Origin of the Health Speculation
The rumours regarding the president's health, and even unfounded claims of his death, gained traction on social media platforms earlier this year. This followed a period in January when Marcos briefly vanished from public view. He later acknowledged in a video message that he had been hospitalised for an abdominal ailment, which he attributed to stress and the natural effects of ageing. Laughing off the more extreme rumours of his demise, Marcos revealed he had been diagnosed with diverticulitis.
Diverticulitis is a medical condition involving inflammation of small pouches, known as diverticula, in the digestive tract—most commonly in the colon. Symptoms typically include abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and constipation.
Current Health Status and Ongoing Management
Marcos provided an update on his condition, noting that his last hospital checkup, conducted a couple of months prior, confirmed he had been cured of the diverticulitis. He added that he has since returned to a normal diet and maintains a regular exercise regimen. When questioned about any ongoing medication, the president disclosed he is taking maintenance drugs for gout and high blood pressure, common age-related conditions.
Governing Amidst Multiple Crises
Since assuming office in mid-2022, President Marcos has confronted a series of complex and overlapping challenges. His administration continues to navigate an increasingly tense and hostile territorial dispute with Beijing in the strategically vital South China Sea. Domestically, the Philippines has been battered by devastating natural disasters, including powerful earthquakes, severe typhoons, and widespread flooding.
Further complicating his presidency are significant economic difficulties, tumultuous and strained relations with his own vice president, and a major corruption scandal involving powerful legislators and political allies. This scandal has ignited considerable public outrage, adding to the political pressure on his government.
Through this very public demonstration of vitality, President Marcos Jr seeks to project strength and stability, aiming to reassure both the Philippine public and the international community of his capacity to lead through these multifaceted crises.
