British Army Veteran Trapped in Cambodian Hospital After Stroke
A British Army veteran is currently stranded in a hospital in Cambodia, thousands of miles from home, following a devastating medical emergency that has left his family facing a substantial medical bill and significant bureaucratic hurdles.
Medical Emergency Leaves Veteran Paralyzed and Unable to Speak
Michael Blake, a 66-year-old former warrant officer who served 15 years in the British Army, suffered a severe stroke on April 5 while living in Cambodia. The stroke has left him paralyzed on the right side of his body and unable to speak, creating a critical situation for his family back in the UK.
His son, Terry Blake, 43, from Shoebury, Essex, described the heartbreaking scene upon arriving in Cambodia to be by his father's side. "When I arrived, it was three-and-a-half days later and information was scattered as to what had happened," Terry revealed. "I found him on a gurney in the hospital with just a saline drip. Those 24 to 48 hours after a stroke are imperative, and he had been moved between two different hospitals before reaching Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh."
Insurance Access Issues Compound the Crisis
The family is grappling with a complex insurance dilemma due to Cambodia's pay-for-care healthcare system and strict data protection laws. Since Michael cannot verbally give consent in his current condition, Terry is unable to access his father's insurance policies, leading to mounting medical bills.
Terry explained the financial pressure: "When I go to see him in the hospital, they give me the bill and tell me I need to pay it before I see him. We think he had insurance, but he is currently unable to speak or move so there are difficulties accessing it without some kind of consent from him."
So far, the family has paid approximately £4,000 for Michael's treatment and faces an additional £1,500 to bring payments up to date, with total costs estimated at around £7,000.
Family's Desperate Fight to Bring Him Home
Michael, who moved to Cambodia 16 months ago after retiring from the Army, had found happiness and a new social life among expatriates in the country. Terry noted that during a visit just four weeks before the stroke, "it was the happiest I'd ever seen him since he left the Army."
Now, with Michael recently moved from intensive care to a general ward, Terry has returned to the UK to coordinate efforts to repatriate his father. The family has set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover medical expenses and is receiving support from the Royal British Legion.
Veteran's Service Background and Personal Journey
Michael Blake served in various conflict zones during his Army career, including Belize, Bosnia as a United Nations peacekeeper (blue beret), Africa, and Sudan. His son believes that his father's military experiences, particularly in Bosnia, deeply affected him, leading to a lifelong search for peace.
"Since he left the Army, he's always been looking for somewhere where he can be at peace," Terry said. "He stayed in the UK with me when I was diagnosed with testicular cancer, and when he got the all-clear, he moved to Cambodia. He finally seemed to have found contentment."
The family remains hopeful but stressed, pulling together with friends and relatives to navigate this challenging situation while advocating for Michael's safe return to the UK.
