Caleb Shomo, the frontman of the rock band Beartooth, came out as a 'proudly gay man' in a heartfelt Instagram post on Saturday. The 33-year-old musician addressed longstanding speculation about his personal life, sharing his journey of self-discovery.
Caleb Shomo's Statement
In a lengthy message to his 213,000 followers, Shomo wrote: 'I feel compelled to set the record straight before it affects those I love any further. I am a proudly gay man.' He admitted that navigating his feelings had been difficult and that he had spent years burying his emotions with alcohol.
Shomo reflected on his past music, describing four Beartooth albums as 'very self-deprecating' and exploring themes of religious upbringing, depression, and self-hatred. He expressed embarrassment that he hadn't allowed himself to 'dig up the roots' sooner but gratitude for those albums. His upcoming album, he said, will allow him to express himself wholeheartedly.
He concluded by thanking supporters and encouraging others struggling with their identity to 'give themselves grace' and 'do the hard work instead of burying it down.'
Fleur Shomo's Response
Hours later, Fleur Shomo, his wife of 13 years, shared her own statement. She described the past few months as 'disorientating and hurtful' but affirmed her love for Caleb. 'I will always want to love, protect and support Caleb,' she wrote.
Fleur acknowledged the 'duality' of supporting him while 'losing everything,' and admitted her mental health suffered due to isolation. She honored their marriage as 'wonderful and full of fun, adventure, and love,' but confirmed it is over. She ended with a hopeful note about focusing on what she can control.
The couple married in 2012 after dating for about two years and have no children.
