Uber Driver Killed in Sydney Crash Was 22-Year-Old Student

A 22-year-old Uber driver killed in a triple-fatality crash in Sydney's south has been identified as Shoaib Hussain, a social work student who drove for the ride-sharing service to support himself and his family in Pakistan.

The Crash

In the early hours of Saturday morning, Mr Hussain had picked up passenger Seamus Duignan, 28, who was heading home after celebrating his birthday at a concert. As they traveled in Mr Hussain's blue Toyota Camry, a speeding white Audi smashed into them on Rocky Point Road in Sans Souci. The impact killed Mr Hussain, Mr Duignan, and the Audi driver, Tamati Gilbert, at the scene.

Background of the Audi Driver

Minutes before the crash, police had been called to Gilbert's home in Gymea Bay after his partner raised grave concerns about his mental health. Officers found Gilbert sitting in his Audi in the driveway, but he sped away. CCTV footage later showed him traveling at considerable speeds before the crash.

Victims Remembered

Shoaib's best friend, Qasim Malik, described him as a kind and hardworking person who had come to Australia four years ago to study. He had not seen his family in Pakistan since arriving. Malik said Shoaib's family is completely broken by the news. Shoaib started driving for Uber in early 2026 to earn extra money, and the fatal trip was meant to be his last fare of the night.

Seamus Duignan's brother, Sean, called him a good man, brother, and uncle who loved a laugh. Their mother, Kim Duignan, demanded a comprehensive investigation into the crash.

Aftermath

Malik said that after forensic examinations, a funeral will be held in Auburn before Shoaib's body is returned to Pakistan for burial. The crash has left both families devastated.
