A Texas mother broke down in court as she was charged with capital murder after her two young children were found dead inside a burning car. Marlene Vidal, 34, sobbed uncontrollably during a Friday court appearance, hours after her arrest.
The victims, Adrian Akeel, 5, and Aleeza Elena, 6, were identified by family members. Their bodies were discovered in a charred white Hyundai SUV on a San Antonio road early Friday morning after a witness walking a dog saw the vehicle ablaze and called 911. Firefighters extinguished the flames and found the children inside.
It remains unclear whether the siblings died before the fire or from the flames. The medical examiner has not yet released their identities or cause of death.
When police arrived at the scene, Vidal identified herself as the mother. Authorities said she had driven approximately three hours from her hometown of Edinburg to San Antonio on Thursday, though the reason is unknown.
The day before, police in Edinburg responded to a Walmart after reports that Vidal was acting erratically. Her sister, Argelia Vidal, said she was seen with lighter fluid and a grill in her shopping cart. Concerned customers called police, but officers had no legal grounds to arrest her after she declined help.
According to Argelia, Vidal began suffering severe mental health issues about a year ago after a psychotic episode. The family tried to get law enforcement and child welfare officials to intervene, but nothing came of it. “We reached out to every agency we could and they all failed us,” Argelia said. “Now my sister’s going to get the help that she needs. But the children are dead.”
She recounted a June 2025 incident when Vidal drove chaotically from Edinburg to San Antonio with the children and was pulled over by a state trooper. Child Protective Services placed Adrian and Aleeza with another aunt for over a month, but later deemed Vidal fit to care for them again. “They asked us, ‘Has she threatened the kids?’ We’re like, ‘No, but we know they’re in danger because she’s out of it,’” Argelia said.
On Wednesday alone, she called authorities at least ten times, according to phone records. The children are remembered as “amazing kids.” Adrian, who was autistic, “was always full of life,” while Aleeza wanted to be a doctor and “believed she was a little angel,” according to a GoFundMe page. The family is seeking financial help for funeral expenses.
Vidal is held on a $2.1 million bond for two counts of capital murder of a child under ten and one arson charge, with $1 million for each murder count and $100,000 for arson.
