PGMO Apologises to Forest Over Man United Goal Error

Nottingham Forest have received an apology from the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) following their 3-2 Premier League defeat against Manchester United, with refereeing chiefs admitting a significant error. The controversy centred on Manchester United's second goal, scored by Matheus Cunha, which put the visitors 2-1 ahead. Replays clearly showed Bryan Mbuemo controlling the ball with his arm in the build-up, yet the goal was allowed to stand after a VAR review.

Referee Error Acknowledged

Despite VAR advising referee Michael Salisbury to review the incident at the pitchside monitor, the official controversially decided the handball was accidental, allowing the goal to stand. PGMO chief Howard Webb has since contacted Forest to concede that Salisbury should have overturned his initial decision and offered an apology for the mistake. The error ended Forest's eight-game unbeaten run, leaving the club frustrated.

Pundits and Manager React

The decision drew fierce criticism from pundits, with Gary Neville calling it an “absolute shocker”. Forest manager Vitor Pereira voiced frustration over the ambiguity of the handball rule, stating that such errors are costly in tight Premier League contests. The incident has reignited debate over the consistency of VAR interventions and the interpretation of handball laws.
