A lorry driver who was on a video call with his wife moments before causing a fatal crash on the M20 in Kent has been sentenced to 11 years in prison. Zvonko Tomisa, 58, was travelling at approximately 55mph when he ploughed into the car of Arran McManus, 36, which was stationary in standstill traffic on 25 November last year.
Court Details the Tragic Events
Maidstone Crown Court heard that Tomisa attempted to brake just one second before impact, but it was too late. Mr McManus's vehicle was crushed into another lorry, causing injuries described as 'not survivable'. The court was told that in the hour leading up to the collision, Tomisa had multiple calls and messages on his phone, and at the time of the crash, he was engaged in a video call with his wife.
Judge Condemns 'Senseless' Actions
Judge Catherine Moore described Tomisa's actions as 'entirely senseless', emphasising that the tragedy was entirely avoidable. She sentenced Tomisa to 11 years in prison and banned him from driving for 14 years and four months. Tomisa had pleaded guilty to death by dangerous driving.
Police and Family React
Kent Police highlighted the avoidable nature of the incident, noting that Tomisa's distraction had devastating consequences. Mr McManus, a father-of-two, was described as a loving family man whose life was cut short by a moment of reckless behaviour. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of using mobile phones while driving.
