A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Shanghai was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Washington state after an unruly passenger disrupted the journey. The incident occurred on Sunday, when Delta Flight 39 departed Los Angeles at 12:15 pm but was diverted to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport at 6:26 pm, according to flight tracking data from FlightAware.
Midair Disturbance Prompts Diversion
The Airbus A350-900, which was carrying 271 passengers, was traveling off the coast of northwestern Washington when crew members decided to change course due to a passenger who repeatedly ignored instructions. A Delta spokesperson stated that the crew issued multiple warnings to the individual, but they continued to refuse compliance. Ultimately, the decision was made to land early 'for the safety of the aircraft and passenger.'
Police Intervention and Flight Cancellation
Upon landing, officers from the Seattle Police Department met the aircraft at the gate and removed the disruptive passenger. Delta did not provide further details about what occurred after the removal. The flight was originally scheduled to continue to Shanghai later that evening but was ultimately canceled. The long-haul service was rescheduled and departed on Monday at 11:10 am without any further issues.
Aircraft and Crew Details
The Airbus A350-900, which measures 219 feet in length, nearly 56 feet in height, and has a wingspan of 212 feet, was staffed by 11 flight attendants and four pilots. The aircraft is powered by two turbofan engines and can cruise at speeds of up to 552 mph.
Delta's Zero-Tolerance Policy
A Delta spokesperson emphasized the airline's strict stance on unruly behavior, stating, 'Delta has zero tolerance for unruly behavior, as the safety of our customers and crew always comes first.' The airline apologized for the delay and thanked passengers for their patience.

This event follows another recent incident involving a Delta Air Lines Airbus aircraft, when an engine erupted in flames during takeoff from a Brazilian airport. That flight, DL 104 from Sao Paulo to Atlanta, experienced a major mechanical issue with its left engine, though no injuries were reported.
