Bruno Fernandes signed off his season in style with a goal and a record-breaking assist as Manchester United thrashed Brighton 3-0, condemning the Seagulls to a place in the Conference League.
Record-breaking performance
The United captain set up Patrick Dorgu's opener to claim the outright Premier League assist record with a tally of 21, surpassing the previous record held jointly by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry. Bryan Mbeumo then doubled the lead in the closing minutes of the first half. Fernandes, who was recently crowned Premier League player of the season, added the third goal early in the second period to cap a dominant display.
Brighton's disappointment
Brighton began the final day in pole position for a Europa League place but offered little during a deflating end to the season. They must now settle for playing in European club football's tertiary competition next term, having slipped to eighth place below Sunderland.
Carrick's first win as permanent boss
The match marked Michael Carrick's first match as permanent manager of Manchester United, following the turbulent tenure of Ruben Amorim. Carrick has revived United's fortunes with 12 wins from 17 top-flight games. He will now turn his attention to bolstering his squad for Champions League football.
